Salary: £60,000-£65,000

Having played a major part in the UK Telecoms industry for over 20 years, our client is a dynamic infrastructure delivery and management consultancy who service some of the biggest names in the UK Telecoms industry.


Due to their continued growth, they are currently looking for a Project-Based Design Manager to help lead the project specific Design Team. The Design Manager will oversee the delivery of high volume, quality output and act as the leader of design and engineering for all project stakeholders. This role will include national tracking and reporting of design progress as well as being the design and engineering point of contact for the client third parties.



The Design Manager will set the project design standards based on the company and client requirements and communicate to all relevant stakeholders. Project engineers will use the Design Manager as their design point of escalation to resolve project specific and client issues. Line manager to Design Engineers & CAD resources, the Design Manager is responsible for ensuring CAD deliverables for the project are met and that the company adopts a best practice approach to all facets of design.


Key Challenges

  • To develop and maintain systems for the delivery of design and engineering for a specific project within the company’s design processes and procedures
  • Acting as both the internal & external escalation point for project-specific design issues
  • Resolving project design issues, setting work outputs & driving quality expectations


Role Requirements

  • Ensure the delivery of high-quality design outputs both internally & through the use of external parties
  • Implement & maintain processes and systems to ensure that robust quality assurance is carried out on all designs as per Company policies
  • Analyse, report on and make recommendations to mitigate unnecessary design revisions & improve the productivity & efficiency of the projects’ design resources
  • Lead and manage a multi-disciplined, geographically diverse team to achieve common objectives
  • Demonstrated ability to chair design forums / discussions and disseminate design & engineering information
  • Experience in construction of civil and structural works, promoting design buildability & cost control amongst design team
  • Working knowledge of H&S (safety in design) principles & best practice
  • Ability to mentor teams, identify training gaps providing for professional development, motivation & support for project design team
  • Write technical documents & develop standards for project
  • Demonstrated ability to procure information & report findings
  • Attendance at, & participation in, client meetings as required
  • Processing of new instructions & managing ad-hoc instructions from the client as they arise, ensuring that any variations are captured
  • Maintenance & auditing of internal & external databases
  • Assume key role in driving SHEQ policies, procedures & practices across the project
  • Identify & pursue where possible, new business opportunities with both existing & new clients
  • Ensure understanding of business objectives and deliver results that contribute to the profitability of the company


Candidate Requirements

  • Tertiary Qualification in Engineering (or related discipline) or relevant design management experience
  • Proven experience at a Design Manager or Senior Design Engineer level within the telecommunications industry
  • Good people management skills with the ability to lead, motivate, manage & coach individuals
  • Ability to handle heavy workload & competing priorities
  • Flexible & professional approach to work
  • Excellent communication skills – both verbal & written
  • Solid understanding of project management processes and best practice
  • Strong analytical skills and strong investigative skills, ability to procure information & report findings
  • Strong commercial & financial acumen
  • Display strong business acumen & the ability to understand the Company’s strategic direction
  • Knowledge of the principles of H&S, quality & environmental legislation & best practice
  • Effective negotiation skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships at all levels
  • Working knowledge of Auto CAD (highly desirable)
  • Sound IT skills including advanced skills in Microsoft Office; Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint
